That paucity of candidates does, however, give an opening to an ideologue looking to cram thru an unpopular agenda. The wonder is that more of them haven’t seized the opportunities.

Township clerks are responsible for conducting elections, voter registration, and all record keeping (including the official township ledger). Pay is less than $13,000, in many cases a lot less. The number of hours for what is clearly a part-time job have increased a lot recently with new state requirements for early voting and mail ballots. Not a lot of “agenda” opportunities.

There’s a residency requirement for officers. The smallest Michigan township has 15 residents. Filling five mandatory positions there would require a third of the population to hold elected office.

Voting for yourself could really make a difference!

The state of California has notified me by email to say that they have received my ballot and it will be counted. It’ll take post hoc ratfuckery to get to it now.

As of this morning in my Colorado county, almost 17% of registered voters’ ballots have been returned. For the olds (age 65+) double that at 35%. Very large majority returned by drop box rather than mail. 0.32% voted in person. Heavy turnout by registered Democrats. (Side note: 51% of Colorado registered voters are registered as unaffiliated.)

The next county over is more conservative. Lower overall turnout, but registered Democrats there also having heavy early turnout.

Wasn’t there a “city” in the LA metro area that had something like 3 actual residents? Because corruption, of course.

Hopefully changed since I read about it, years ago, since it had gotten some attention.

That Ramaswamy ad looks like the biggest foot-in-mouth (or hoisting by own petard) by any candidate, among stiff competition.

Suicidal lack of empathy?

OK, that Ramaswamy ad is the gift that keeps on giving. From the Guardian today:

JD Vance says Republicans should ‘stop whining and go win the race in 13 days’ after outrage over Ramaswamy campaign adSpeaking earlier, JD Vance also chided Republicans for their outrage over the controversial campaign ad from Vivek Ramaswamy, featuring his Democratic opponent’s estranged mother.
Amy Acton was sexually abused by her mother’s husband when she was 12 years old, according to her brother Phillip Stearns. Their mother, Donna Arthur, remained married to her husband after he was arrested, even though Acton and Stearns were removed from her care.
Vance said he wasn’t going to weigh in on whether the spot was “appropriate or not”, instead he said that his “message” for fellow elected Republicans is to “stop whining about an advertisement and go win the race in 13 days”.
At a campaign stop in Cincinnati, the vice-president added:

I have to admit that I’m a little bit disgusted when I see Republicans across the country who are whining more about that advertisement than they are about what the congressional Democrats and other Democrats want to do to the United States of America.

I doubt it will make a significant number of people change their preferences, but it seems to me that it will make significant numbers of people more motivated to vote for Acton or less motivated to vote for Ramaswamy if they were already inclined to do either of those things.

“I wasn’t going to vote, but f**k him!” and “I was going to vote, but f**k him!” are the two flavors of “F**k him!” that could swing the election, IMO.

Don’t know the context or the story. Looking at the Los Angeles County voter data, though, I can see that Industry, CA has only 100 registered voters and Vernon, CA only 112. Vernon is only five square miles in size, most of which is covered by warehouses. Industry is like two Vernons stuck next to each other, but with all of the residences shoved onto the west end and closest to the freeway. Looks like only about half of the population of each is registered to vote.

Sounds like your story was about something else.

I think we are underestimating the subhuman hatred, the Cleek’s Law, Ramaswamy is appealing to.

This is the Ohio the fucking Vice President of the United States (who claims he is from my birth town) set against Haitians whose white trash neighbors were eating their own pets (white conservatives, and a few gay, black and hispanic and jewish conservatives, will eat a cat or dog if it means they might pay lower or no taxes to support the swarthies), and then blaming hardworking Haitians for the feast.

We don’t know yet whether this hate gambit will work in MAGA’s subhuman favor or not.

Ah, thanks for looking up the data, memory resurfaced!
It was Vernon.
They may have had to add some population to avoid getting shut down and swallowed by LA. OR, perhaps my memory was inaccurate about the population (pretty sure accurate about the corruption).

“Unbridled empathy can lead to actions that appear compassionate but in fact are not.”

“I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help.”

Reagan was a lying bullshit artist. I paid his fucking government pension even though the used car salesmen who elevated his butt to the Presidency claimed the taxes that paid for it were theft.

We now have this: “I’m from the government and I’m here to shoot you dead on American streets and in and around the U.S. Capitol.

My LACK of empathy for all of this will become fully unbridled soon.

This is why suicidal empathics should carry fully loaded weaponry at all times when among subhuman violent conservatives.

Two Wedgewood non-empathics run some fake polls.

Immediately, Brendan Carr, a government-hating radical non-empathic threatens gummint help to all who were duped.

Also immediately, Christian genocidal fuck Johnson, he with the beatific smile of a psychopath, threatens.

We empathics are not so fucking stupid that we can’t see what is developing here in the realm of stolen elections, media censorship, and the planned non-seating of winning Democratic candidates early next year.

If you’re more concerned about there being too much empathy rather than there being too little, you aren’t paying attention. Well, that or it’s a flimsy excuse for being an a**hole.
