Folks have been talking about this, so I thought I would toss in the NYT Daily on the DSA.

Folks have been talking about this, so I thought I would toss in the NYT Daily on the DSA.
were anyone running for office idiotic enough to ask for my advice, here is what I would say. this would be my message.
not that long ago – 50 or 60 years? – one income could get a family a house and a car. a small house and a basic car. but a house and a car. which, as a side benefit, made child care optional.
not that long ago – 45 years ago? – you could go to a good state college for a couple grand a year, all in.
not that long ago, medical expenses (insurance plus whatever you have to pay out of pocket) didn’t consume 11 or 12% of your income.
etcetera.
what changed?
top marginal tax rates.
union enrollment.
limits on what individuals could contribute to political campaigns.
all the GenZ, millenials, and even GenX folks who hate the boomers – the reason you hate the boomers is because you don’t have the conditions they had.
you could have them again. you have the power to make it happen. vote accordingly.
culture wars – mind your own business, full stop.
in addition – “persons” in the Constitution means human beings living in and under the jurisdiction of the US. “Under the jurisdiction” means the law can be applied to you. Basically, if you don’t have diplomatic immunity or similar, you’re under the jurisdiction of the US.
also – time to put teeth back into anti-monopoly laws.
there’s a whole other list that falls under “changes to laws, norms, and protocols that apply to government”.
that list includes:
no-one holding national elected office can trade stocks etc. while in office. federal judges, likewise. cabinet-level and similar appointed officials, likewise.
strict limits on financial gifts to all of the above, either as financial instruments of any kind or in-kind goods or services.
SCOTUS justices serve for 20 years, period, and retire at 75 if they reach that age before their 20 years are up.
congressional districts are re-districted after each census, period.
I could go on and on but I won’t.
The country is being taken over by weird petulant billionaires. They don’t give a single solitary crap about you. They are distorting our ability to govern ourselves.
Time to rein them in.
It’s difficult for housing to be an investment and be affordable.
And of those two, I know which one is more important to economic opportunity, and it ain’t the investment side.
Also, there’s a narrative going around about the coming massive transfer of wealth as boomers start passing on their properties and investments to their children. Corporate elder care is going to swallow up as much of that as they can stuff down their gullets – all while keeping the actual caregivers they employ on non-livable wages.
Open thread?
Demography is a “quasi-open thread”
