I’ve mentioned, from time to time, that I live in Kyushu and perhaps I mentioned that I live in Kumamoto, so this post is to let everyone know that me and mine are ok. It apparently wasn’t as bad as the one 10 years ago (I was presenting at a conference and wasn’t at home for that one) and my wife said that the one 10 years ago was longer and there were two shocks with a lot less aftershocks (the previous one, according to my wife, had them occurring all through the night). The epicenter was also 10 km further south, and preliminary measures estimate the magnitude of this one as 7.1 but the previous one as 7.3. That 0.2 is on a logarithmic scale related to energy released but translates to a 50% greater amplitude, all other things being equal.
Anyway, back to doom scrolling and looking at pictures and asking my wife ‘hey, isn’t that XXX’ Stay safe.

Especially since anything over 7 is a really major deal. Even in places like Japan and California, where we’re pretty hardened to the ground shaking under us.
