What’s up, doxx?

by liberal japonicus In the comments, there was some discussion of doxxing, which seems like a very mutable term, so a post about it might be interesting. The term ‘dox’ comes from the 90’s hacker culture. It was originally ‘to drop docs on’, and because the hacker culture generally operated on a basis of anonymity, … Read more

Opinions on settings

by liberal japonicus (image from https://www.boredpanda.com/vintage-soviet-russian-control-panel-rooms/) A very short post with a few questions Needless to say, no money is required. If people are opposed to the idea because they want to limit their information in the wild, no problem, but if that isn’t a problem, it appears that some sort of limits can be … Read more

From the archive: hilzoy on Avian Flu (9 Oct 2005)

[note: One thing that I thought would be interesting would be to pull up posts from the archive and this post has been one floating in the back of my mind for quite a while. I’ve been wondering what would be the best format, and this is is my current idea, though it is not set in stone. I’ve deleted the comments, cleaned up the links (though many of them are broken, but the urls are cleaned up so you can find them on the wayback machine if you put your mind to it), and some other anal-retentive sort of stuff. Comments on the format or suggestions for other posts to put up here are warmly welcomed!

It’s Pandemic Flu Awareness Week, so I thought I’d write a Pandemic Flu Awareness Post. Actually, a couple of them. This one is on general background and a few hints for personal preparedness; the next one will be on governmental responses and related issues.

The Qatar that plays like butter

by liberal japonicus Michael Cain, MVC (most valuable commenter) posted this comment in response to some discussion about the training agreement with Qatar that has Laura Loomer losing it. The request for a training facility was made in 2017, shortly after the Obama administration approved selling current versions of the F-15 Strike Eagle to Qatar. … Read more

The Mother-in-law defense

by liberal japonicus Probably need a thread about the shutdown and all those inside baseball-y things, though I’ll be damned if I can think of anything to say. The college coach, Rick Pitino described his defense as the ‘Mother-in-law defense’, which was a full-court press that he said was based on ‘constant harassment’, and that … Read more

Bathtub Bug is Dead

guestpost by wonkie Our house has on-demand hot water. Turn on the tap, wait while the cold water pours out, wait for it, wait for it…the heater kicks on and gradually you get warmer, warmer, hot! The heater is right below the kitchen sink, so hot water out there is easy to get. The bathtub, … Read more

Weekend music thread #1

by liberal japonicus To be honest, my musical tastes are probably clinically insane levels of ecleticism. This hasn’t been helped with the purchase of ear pods that prevent Mrs LJ from being subjected to whatever I’m listening to. I also use music in my classes, so even if I don’t like it, if students like … Read more

…..

by liberal japonicus This was at the top of my google news: A euphoric Donald Trump wins a breakthrough in the Middle East though the article is behind a paywall. The Guardian has this: A Gaza ceasefire deal could be Trump’s biggest diplomatic achievement – but the devil is in the detail. What to say? … Read more

Let’s start calling a thug a thug

guestpost by wonkie I’ve been thinking. There’s a lot of discussion on Bluesky of the “Dems don’t fight” type. The Democratic party is at a low point in opinion polling, probably because of the image of Dems as not fighters. There’s a feeling that the times demand a different sort of rhetoric from Democrats. I’ve … Read more
