Notes about commenting

by liberal japonicus

While the blog has a setting that says “Before a comment appears ☑️Comment author must have a previously approved comment”. Unfortunately, it seems that you have to make an account and be logged in. Otherwise, your comment will go into moderation.

The urge is to think that this just a little backwater and it won’t be subject to the problems of the internet, but we’ve already gotten one spam message and looking at old blogs, you can often find tons of spam littering the comments. Also, leaving things open could have people come and pretend to be someone else, posting something inflammatory and then backing up to watch the fireworks.

Though I totally understand password fatigue, for the time being, all I can do is ask folks to sign up. If you have any problems, I can send a password reset link, just either write a comment that needs to be moderated that says “Help, I forgot my password” (which I will do and then delete the comment, unless (and I don’t recommend this) you continue your comment) or you can write to me at libjpn@gmail.com. Because of the time difference, I see the blog about when everyone is going to sleep, so factor that in.

I’ll talk more about the backend and why there are problems in my next Excelsior! post. Thanks.

How/where do you make the account. I can’t find a way, and a search brought up nothing. Below my comment box I have a box for my handle, a box for my email address, an empty box (I don’t have a website) and an already ticked box for “Save my name, email and website in this browser for the next time I comment”.

Until now none but my first comment (as announced) went into moderation, and I just entered name and email address without opening any account.
I did not click the box “save my name…”

The last one did. Testing to see if this comment goes to moderation while I’m logged in.

Test comment. Curious about the time stamp, is it GMT?

I thought I would see how long that last comment was in moderation, because I think last night the average for mine was about 40 minutes. It’s now 21.02, so it’s been in almost three hours, and I’m bored with checking on it, so this is just a catch up before I shut up shop. As I mentioned, all my boxes except website are filled and ticked. And Priest, the time stamp seems to be UK Summer Time, which is GMT+1.

Correction: the time stamp was 8.05, which is indeed GMT, so the first comment had been in moderation for almost two hours.

Does anyone who has problems have their browser set to block cookies?

I normally disable what cookies I can when on any new site. I do not recall being asked about this when I first logged on here. Apparently, I have “Third Party Cookies” enabled, for what that’s worth.
