Jane Goodall RIP

by liberal japonicus

Noted by Charles WT in the comments, Jane Goodall has passed away. At the risk of making another bad joke, there is this

Gary Larson cartoon incident

In 1987, Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, “Conducting a little more ‘research’ with that Jane Goodall tramp?”[114] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an “atrocity” in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[115] She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[116]

Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[117] Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[118] She praised Larson’s creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals. In 1988, Larson visited Goodall’s research facility in Tanzania,[115] and was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.

From here

Clearly, Frodo was not amused.

R.I.P. Jane Goodall. A life well spent.

And apparently she had a better sense of humor, and took herself less seriously, than either her Institute or that hothead chimp Frodo.

A life well spent

Few better, I’d say.

“An inspiring portrait of the private person behind world-famous primatologist Jane Goodall and her legendary study of wild chimpanzees in Africa.”

There’s a very good documentary about her:

There is also somewhat related a classic from the 80s about Diane Fossey

I’ve been not dealing with this because it is less painful to me to be angry than to be sad. There are people whose death really hurts–I mean people I don’t know but seem somehow permanent and essential so it’s a shock when they die.
