Beginning to feel up to doing some work again after two days of post-surgery pain management (great masochist summer vacation – 5 stars). I am building a new research class for the fall that is about bicycle-centered activism – any public policy work that focuses on the bicycle* as human transportation.

Any hope that, if Binface wins, that will put paid to Farage? From what little I can gather, from across the pond and a whole continent besides, the UK would be noticably better without him. Not because there aren’t others equally bad. But just because a high profile takedown hurts them all. And for it to be by a joke candidate would be even worse.

As much as I am occasionally enjoying the World Cup, though less engaged than usual, I find it also downright surreal that the host nation is involved in an aggressive war (against a participating nation) and nobody seems to even mention it. If Russia or China were hosting, all hell would break lose…
novakant – FIFA is farcically corrupt at the top, as is the US, and the disconnect between leadership and populace is stark in both cases. In such circumstances, surrealism is the preferred mode of representation.
Also, one can’t help feeling that it’s good for the American sport-watching population to see the graciousness, care and affection displayed amongst multi-cultural teams, both in-team and between different teams too. I don’t get the impression that’s very common in US teams, but I’d be more than happy to be corrected
The US sports landscape is going through a bit of transition. Women’s pro sports (WNBA, NWSL, PWHL) are growing in popularity in spite of active hostility from the Anxious Young Misogynist core that fuels the sports media empire. I’m also seeing support for women’s high school wrestling among rural parents, which bucks the sexist trend.
Baseball and soccer are both fairly multicultural in the US, and blend an interesting mix of fans split between blue collar ethnic communities and college educated urban cosmopolitan fans. There are still a lot of rural conservative little league parents out there, but the heart of the fandom lies elsewhere.
Hockey also seems to be opening up to more multicultural attention. There’s a lot of attention being paid to attracting young players of color, and Heated Rivalry is putting pressure on the closet that the elite male players still live with. I think it’s only a matter of time there. The women’s version is very queer-friendly already. The WNBA may also put some pressure on the NBA, but who knows there. Sports talk hazing culture still rules for men’s basketball and American football. That’s not going away anytime soon.
The foreign fans, after drinking all the beer and getting lost in Buc-ee’s, don’t want to leave, or they’re taking all the Ranch dressing home with them… š
Saw the Skatalites at the City Winery last night. Probably one original member (they started in 1964) but the young’uns stuck to the roots. They were absolutely freaking great, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
Most of the band were American, the white rasta guitarist was from Bordeaux. Bass and drums were Jamaican, though, so it was proper ska.
They’re gonna be at City Winery in NYC tonight, then Philly tomorrow. If that works for any of you all, they’re worth checking out. Ska is a truly joyful musical style. Somewhere there is a masters in musicology thesis waiting to be written about the joy and resilience of music created by oppressed people.
In other news, this country is going to shit, and we still somehow have not figured out what to do about it. I pretty much feel like I’m along for the ride at this point, and am just looking for places to make the world a little better outside of the political process.

There’s a problem with that. Nukes are useful if you want a big bang. If you want to take out lots of bad guys while sparing lots good guys who happen to be not very far away? Not fit for purpose.
To take an obvious example, if you want to take out the politicians who are the focus of the problem in your state, you could perhaps hit the state capital while the legislature is in session. But the state capital is a city, so its inhabitants are probably substantially more liberal than those politicians. Hit the capital building with a nuke, and the vast majority of those killed will be your people, not your enemies.
Ok sorry, I am now officially for France. The thought of Trump handing over the trophy to his golf buddy Kane is just too grating. Him having to give it to Mbappe would be a great moment (remember 1936 lol) and more importantly a real problem for Le Pen and the RN .

It is the perfect counter-example to novakant’s Jesse Owens reference. I know that many US teams are multicultural, but I haven’t seen much in the way of overt fraternal affection. I don’t watch much sports though, so it may happen – I hope it does.

England supporter here – I can’t help it: Kane played one round of golf with Trump about 18 months ago, and made some polite remarks about Trump’s being good at the game for an 80-year-old.
