That one uses threads — you can reply to a comment — but only 3 levels deep, I think.

Wouldn't happen here, but I've seen websites' comment quality go downhill fast after threaded comments were introduced.

After processing the image. The "AI" took some liberties with the details it added. Like giving the men hats.

Images huh?

I've been playing around with Google AI Studio.

Here are before and after images using the prompt, "A woman walks to an excursion boat, probably in Port Aransas, 1907. Please restore the image by removing noise, adding missing detail, sharpening, and colorizing."

On “Where are the 5 words?

what would you want the Guard or the Army to actually do?

I don't want them to do anything. Trump shouldn't be mobilizing the National Guard against the wishes of the state. But the failures of the local authorities to enforce the law and ordinances certainly give him an excuse.

P.S. the “forum similar to this one” 10-15 years ago wasn’t the old ObWi, was it?

No, the forum was one of several over the years used by a small group of people I first encountered in 1998.

"

About a decade and a half ago, I used to pursue and comment on a form similar to this one. One of the regular participants would occasionally cross the line with ad hominem attacks, insults, and general nastiness. When called to task, he would complain bitterly about the Civility Brigade.

"

Charles, the thing that puzzles me at least, is that if that is what you think of Trump, how is it possible for you to lament the protests outside the ICE place in “war-ravaged” Portland...

Two wrongs don't make a right. The protesters are unlikely to have any positive influence on anyone who counts, especially the Trump administration. The protests are more likely to be counterproductive, especially with the locals who are sick of the months and years of chaos in their lives.

And, as a side note, how come you are just accepting the “evidence” of people like honeybadgermom?

I've seen videos from several sources showing protestors engaging in bad behavior. Assaulting individuals. Throwing objects and fireworks at ICE personnel. Damaging property. People have the right to protest. They don't have the right to break the law.

...why are you prepared to so staunchly defend some of the consequences of his actions, even when they conflict with principles you have always said you support?

I'm at a loss as to which consequences I have staunchly defended.

Here's another breakdown of the protestors.

"Members of the anti-ICE crowd in Portland can be divided into one of four main categories. There is some overlap – rioters fitting into more than one group – but these categories encompass nearly everyone there."

Thanks russell.

I haven't commented much on Trump because I thought everyone here was pretty much in agreement that he is a self-absorbed, narcissistic, immoral, unethical boofun running roughshod over the law, the Constitution, and people's lives.

Or perhaps to commit suicide by hanging by standing on a bucket and kicking it out from under the feet.

"

"Kick the bucket" is an 18th-century phrase where bucket is another name for a beam. Perhaps kicking while hanging from a beam.

Charles, did you actually read russell’s link at 7.35? Is that necessary, or OK with you?

I agree with most of the criticisms of Trump. I don't feel compelled to reiterate them.

The government has more important things it could be doing than chasing down illegal immigrants who haven't broken the law, have jobs, and families. The ones who have been here for some number of years and stayed out of trouble should be given a path to becoming legal. More legal immigration should be allowed, and the bureaucratic nightmare of doing so should be fixed.

"

Wow, the facility really needs it too – that broken door in June is crying out for federal protection.

I suppose then that cladding the facility with plywood is just a design preference. The local authorities seem unwilling or unable to enforce the law, ordinances, and protect the facility. When vehicles need to enter or exit the facility and there are protestors, ICE personnel have to suit up and physically push the protestors back to make a path.

Honestly Charles, when you you look at the big picture and make these kinds of arguments, ...

The big picture is that, at best, Trump and his cronies are a bunch of idiots. Not so different from previous administrations, just more in your face with it. Though I'd admit, Trump is proving to be uniquely bad.

On one hand, some activists yelling at ICE all night long with a bullhorn. Yes, that’s a PITA.

When you, unlike the narcissistic brats protesting, have a job and responsibilities, it's more than just a PITA.

Antifa isn’t gonna do anything to you if you’re not a declared fascist, white supremacist, Nazi, or similar, or possibly open and vocal supporter of same.

I look forward to the expressions of libertarian outrage about the abuse and overreach of government power.

Libertarians can become outrage exhausted since they can be continuously outraged regardless of who's running the government.

"

So, Charles, is it the Libertarian (or your) position that sending in federal troops, contrary to the wishes of the state authorities, to deal with what respectable news sources show to be an annoying, smallish protest, is the right (or even acceptable) thing to do?

The federal government has the right to protect the ICE facility. Otherwise, it should stay out unless invited in by the state's governor.

"

This video does a good survey of the Portland situation. It has criticisms for both sides. It shows the ICE facility having, at times, many more than five protestors.

Special Report: 48 Hours in Portland

"

At times, there have been several hundred protestors at the ICE facility.

People have a right to protest. But they don't have the right to make other people's lives unlivable, assault people, or destroy property.

On “Where are the 5 words?

On making life difficult. There are a couple of low-rise apartment buildings on the block adjacent to the facility. I know I wouldn't want to listen to bullhorns and boomboxes all night long while trying to sleep.

"

Tony, I think you missed the heavy dose of sarcasm in Charles’ comment

Perhaps. But Antifa and others have been congregating in front of the ICE facility every night for more than three months, making the lives of everyone living near the facility difficult.

Here's one of several people who post videos of activities at and near the facility.

Japan is headed for a population crash. Without immigration, maybe AI and robots can make up some of the difference. In any case, there will be a rough patch while the numbers of the old and young rebalance and the population shrinks over time.
