Excelsior 2.0: more details about the site and requests

by liberal japonicus

Work on the archive site continues, I’m currently deleting the doubled comments and figuring how to make list of front-pagers that is connected to their posts.

Still don’t know exactly how commenters are approved. Some people are able to comment it seems, but others (wj) keeps getting held up for approval. In related news, we got our first spam (Bitcoin marketing), so I’m not going to lower the drawbridge just yet.

Hartmut asked if html markdown was still available, so this is from Gemini

WIth the new posting interface as well as the difficult of locating stable urls for information (both Charlie Kirk’s death and the Hyundai/ICE have played out on social media and news reports that are problematic cf. Wall Street Journal’s reportage on the Kirk killing and the current reports of Kirk’s roommate), I’m thinking that posts can no longer be the sort of writing where a position can be set out and supported by links, especially if it is a topic in the news. This was already a problem for me, but trying to think of what to write about Kirk and Hyundai/ICE really brought that home. That means that I’ll probably post much shorter posts to allow folks to discuss.

That also leads to a request. If anyone has subscriptions to the New York Times, the Washington Post and possibly the Los Angeles Times and would be willing to post an gift link (weekly, biweekly or monthly) as a regular feature, that might be a good way to keep ObWi going. I think that I can create an alternate login so you wouldn’t have to worry about people taking issue with you because of the article chosen or what was said in the article.

I’m also trying to figure out what kind of commenting systems are out there and what could work here. These are run thru plugins, but there are also separate comment systems, but I’m hesitant to do that, especially if it becomes a huge timesink, but I’d like to investigate whatever is out there, so discussion would be welcome.

Thanks!

lj, I have an NYT subscription (gave up WaPo because of Bezos’s craven behaviour), and would be happy to post gift links. I am allowed 10 gift articles per month, and would probably only have to save say 4 for my own purposes, so doing one a week for ObWi shouldn’t be a problem. Just let me know how to do it, and also what kind of thing you would like linked, and it shall be done. Also, I have an Atlantic sub, but can’t remember what the gifting rules are (I rarely read it), so let me know if there’s anyone from there you’d like on ObWi and I’ll look into it.

Does this only apply to frontpager posts, or to all our comments from the peanut gallery? I’m asking because I never understand what exactly is a “post”.

lj, two of my comments on wonkie’s post (the second one sentence saying the first is awaiting moderation) have gone into moderation! I thought this is the kind of thing you should know about!
