On “Open Thread

On other websites, "clicked links" have a color change, with the same browser. So perhaps there's a super-sekrit browser setting for "change those colors NO MATTER WHAT the server wants", but I haven't found it yet.

But then again, I still haven't found the "click this button on the browser to make this webserver crash and burn", so maybe it's my own fault.

"

More threads aren't needed.
What I mostly want is to be able to easily find if there are new comments, and read them.

So: too much stuff at the top of the page, requiring scrolling down a page or two, and for whatever reason, comment links that one has previously clicked don't change color, making it harder to tell if there are new comments beyond what was previously read.

Nit pickery! It's all nit-pickery! Maybe I should demand a refund!

On “Am I missing something?

"Simply loving the image of Imperial Rome as an anarchist collective!"

But all the decisions of the emperor must be ratified by a simple majority of the collective for purely internal decisions, but by a two-thirds majority for external decisions.

Might have worked better.

On “An openish thread featuring the comedy stylings of Steve Witkoff

"Trump will go with whatever end game in Ukraine allows his family to continue to service Trump Organization debts that are held by Russian entities"

You seem to think that Trump wouldn't just walk away from his debts, in spite of all past evidence.

On “Shabana burns the cakes

It is *SO* obnoxious seeing obviously AI-produced images, and having the obsessive need to count fingers just to suppress the "My name is Inigo Montoya" reflex.

On “Pop!

As usual, the stock market is driven by competing motives: greed and fear.

Banknotes stuffed in a mattress is looking better and better.

Or perhaps Giant Stone Wheels.

On “Spelunking for fun and profit

It's important to have a candidate in every race, because you never can tell when the GOPer is found dead in a sleazy motel room, hog-tied, wearing TWO wet-suits, a ball-gag and a butt-plug.

It's scandalous how many hyphens are required to recall that true event.

"

I, for one, look forward to Trump and his MAGA co-conspirators being hoist by their own petard*.

Just hope it happens.

(*and yes, I really love that phrase)

On “Weekend music thread #05 Tuvan throat singing

"Throat singing" is also practiced in Alaskan native societies. Got a CD of it, somewhere.

Takes some getting used to, but I always thought that it would be a musical style that could fit into a rap/hip-hop work, if someone was sufficiently motivated to try.

On “Horrifying stuff

I doubt that DNA testing would do what the racists want, since by the old "one drop rule", we're ALL africans, and the thing that gets them riled up is "melanin content", which is only weakly related to DNA.

Now, some of us have more Neanderthal DNA than others, but that miscegenation is long, long in the past. Probably.

"

Since we seem to be in the worst possible timeline, I expect Juicy Divan to convert to Ye Olde Mormonism, and take Erika Kirk as his new 2nd wife.

On “Monarchy in the UK

Throwing Andrew "under the bus" could be a lot more damaging, with double-decker buses.

On “Politics thread

The consultants will advise: "hire more consultants".

But it would be better for the D's to load the consultants on the B-Ark and send them to Mars to work their magic for Musk.

Reduce/remove TV ads, maybe more radio presence (to the extent it's possible with consolidation). Radio interviews and call-ins? Cheap.

Setting up boots-on-the-ground costs money, but I would not be surprised if it's less than what is saved by eliminating consultants and TV ads. That's less $$$ to be found, and less kowtowing to rich donors, which just causes problems.

On “The South shall writhe again

Yeah, the CB radio craze was a silly waste of time by people that never should have been on the airwaves.

_.__ __._ or GTFO.

On “The Return of the Boat Hook

I've had MANY experiences of threatening computers/printers/projectors with impending demise, after which they stop messing about and behave.

At least for a while. One was just last week.

Now, perhaps it's just Loki doing his thing. But I think I'd know if that was happening. Maybe. So instead I chalk it up the "the inherent perversity of inanimate objects".

On “What to do?

If AI was real and ready for prime time, 95% of the spam would come from AI.
You know it's true.

On “I’m forever blowing bubbles

The old Eliza chatbot was generally harmless.
Wasn't there another, called something like 'Racktor', that simulated a paranoid schizophrenic?
Seems like Trump could be replaced with that one, with little observable difference.

On “The Schadenfreude Express

For Bolton, the Fibbies were searching for "classified documents".
If they find a grocery list, they'll just hand it to Trump and he'll "classify it with his mind", and PRESTO: criminal case.

On “Giving Away the Store

Comrade Krasnov met with his handler and got updated instructions.

On “A New Gilded Age

wj: to make your strategy work properly it requires generating an actual random choice.
PRO TIP: #2 pencils used for multiple-choice have 6 sides: using a pen to impress 'dots' in the wood, 1 dot, 2 dots, etc for the sides. Need a random number? Roll the pencil. Fast and easy.
Computer tests mess that up, dammit.

"

Interesting to compare Trump's "style" with that at Hearst's Castle.

"

The casino is down the street, at will formerly be The Treasury Building.

"

IIRC Napoleon I was more "over-the-top bad taste", but that may just be he has more stuff to see in Paris, and what I saw.

"

Harmut's typos make me laugh, but I want to extend them, from:
"His Orangeness and his role models round the Persion Golf"
to
"His Orangeness and his role models round the Perversion Golf"
Re: bad taste. Napoleon should be part of the discussion.

On “An open thread

Sexual selection for musical capabilities too.
A process that is ongoing.
